Qualifications and Areas of Practice
Diana Barone, LCSW is a licensed individual and couples therapist who treats a variety of psychological and sexual problems. She has over five years of seeing clients with a wide array of presenting problems in New York City. She utilizes a wide practice scope to treat clients who suffer from sexual dysfunctions like Erectile Dysfunction, low desire, pelvic pain, performance anxiety, and orgasmic disorders. She is also experienced in treating general therapy issues including: anxiety disorders, depression, relational issues, academic and occupational stress, infidelity, low self-esteem, self-destructive patterns and trauma.
Diana has worked clinically in an agency setting before joining Center for Love and Sex. She also has experience with animal-assisted therapy, crisis intervention and home care through her past employment with a mobile crisis unit.
Diana graduated from St. John’s University with B.A. in Psychology, from Fordham University with a Master’s in Social Work. Her post-graduate certificate in Sex Therapy was completed at NYU’s Human Sexuality Program, and she has received basic training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Her therapeutic approach is derived from a combination of cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and trauma-informed modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR includes having the client recall distressing images while receiving bilateral sensory input, such as side to side eye movements or tapping on hands or knees. This evidence-based form of therapy helps the brain heal from traumatic events that can cause intrusive thoughts, nightmares, flashbacks or a sense of psychological immobilization.
Her interventions are tailored specifically to each client/couple’s needs. Diana works with individuals and couples with general psychotherapy concerns as well as those who have sex therapy presenting issues. She has worked with adults of varied cultural and religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, and sexual practices integrating their beliefs, preferences and traditions into a collaborative treatment plan. She works with couples who may be curious about kink activities, polyamory relationships or non-monogamy agreements.
She creates a warm, supportive, and empathic atmosphere for clients to be able to express themselves on topics that can be challenging to discuss. Diana strives to create a collaborative experience that enables each client to gain helpful, healing insight and tools to achieve their desired goals.
